Feb 6, 2010, Comet Almost Died From Pork/High Fat Products!!

Comet almost died on February 1.

We did not get a clear diagnosis (cost too much extra) but believe it may have been due to his eating bacon and hot dogs for treats.

Someone in the family thought a small amount a day would not hurt a big dog like him. He was getting regular chunks of cheese as a treat too, which he has been getting for years.

It happened really fast. He vomited all his dinner on Sunday night. Seemed fine the next day and ate well. Vomited all that up at about 2 pm Monday and was not moving much - appeared to have a good deal of abdominal discomfort - lying around in the snow in the backyard and was staring instead of closing his eyes.

At around 5 pm he had some diarrhea. Then it turned to something that looked like raspberry jam and smelled like fresh hamburger meat. After that he vomited again and it turned to pure blood coming out of his rear end.

We took him to an overnight emergency veterinary facility 30 miles away. They put him on IV fluids and antibiotics immediately. He was very dehydrated. We (and the vets) were afraid it was cancer since he kept oozing blood all through the next day.

We had to transfer him to a daytime vet the following morning. They let us take him home on Tuesday afternoon and the bleeding stopped. The bill was over a thousand dollars for 22 hours of care.

He has had no more vomiting or diarrhea since then but his heart may have been affected since it regularly skips a beat. He has been going for modified walks and his BMs have been fine for the past two days but he is still not as energetic as his old self. He may need to be on a bland diet the rest of his life.

So, PLEASE be careful with your dog and let any family members who are susceptible to a begging dog know to stick to low fat, safe foods.

See the link below for foods to avoid.
