Comet's Blog July to December 2009

December 15, 2009

Well, I was right. In between watching the Two Leggers typing at their computers or reading books, it's been pretty fun.

On Thanksgiving, we drove a long way to a foggy, drippy place called the Bay Area. The relatives have a dog that looks like my twin, named Jupiter! We were taken on two great off leash walks in the nearby hills.

After we got back my Papa took me on a very long hike in the hills above town. Another day my Mama came too and we saw a fox.

While we were hiking, we could feel a storm blowing in from the West. Not too long after, it snowed - a lot. It was a good thing I had my coat or my belly would have gotten very wet. We had even more snow a few days ago so it's been hard to go up in the hills.

The good part is I've been allowed to run off leash around streets where there isn't any traffic. Of course, it's a great excuse to look for cats, even though I've found very few so far. But rest assured I'll keep looking...

Happy Holidays and put your best paw forward for 2010! Comet

Looking at what I blogged last month, it's hard to believe we haven't always been living in this house. I have my own backyard again, and a much bigger couch, a futon that I claim as mine as soon as the Humans leave me behind to go somewhere - I mean it's only fair, right?

Sadly, I don't get the walks I used to - now it's pretty much once a day. But there are many ways to go - to the center of the city where there are big buildings, stores and noisy traffic; around quiet blocks of older houses for that neighborhood feel; or to empty land a short way from here - miles and miles of hills and mountains. Since my Two Leggers like variety, we do something different each day...

There aren't too many cats around but lots of dogs. I get to do that sniff-the-behind thing when we meet others off leash in the hills. We often hear barking. I join in every once in a while till I'm made to stop.

The Bipeds have been working on the outside of the house like mad, scraping and painting and caulking. Something about the weather going to be too cold soon. I've also been in the pickup more than usual since they've been transporting stuff too big to fit into the bicycle trailer. When they're not working outside, they're busy on the computers - aargh - why can't they be like dogs and just relax most of the day???

Well, life never stays the same with these folks for long so stay tuned for something different next month!

Happy Thanksgiving, all you Americans and hope you Canadians survived the turkey!... Comet

Well, I'm back - I decided to give my typist last month off because she just didn't have good access to the Internet...

It's been another interesting time. The Two Leggers found a house to buy two months ago but we are not living in it yet. Maybe tomorrow... Meantime they and one of their daughters got the swine flu but all recuperated - must've been the milder version - lucky dogs don't get it. We left the RV park with its bad air and noise and went back up into the mountains. There were two horses with bells running loose and trailing ropes. The owner had trained them to come when he called. I think he must have used treats because when my Bipeds tried to use hot dog pieces to lure me away from one horse I was barking at, he kept following us! One day there we saw a whole bunch of horses and men wearing cowboy hats riding by. Pretty exciting!

We saw lots of bear poop but no bears, just beaver who had dammed up the river in several places. The weather was supremo. After that it was back to the state park with the sagebrush and coyotes. It got pretty cold - 29 degrees inside the trailer on some mornings and an inch of snow one stormy day, then some wild wind and lots of rain on another. Beautiful starry nights though. On one hike we saw three pronghorn antelope. It was hot and we went a long way so it pooped me out for a few days...

Now we're back in a quieter RV park in town. There's a cat that comes around and drives me crazy. We went for a ride to the river area and found an unofficial dog park so I got to pull my usual tough dog act with several different dogs. I'm not getting that much exercise so getting a little crazier every day... But with my Two Leggers around, I know I'll be getting a big hike again soon.

Well, hope you're enjoying the Fall activities, whatever they may be. Till my next appointment with the typist... Comet

Sorry I'm late with the blog this month but there's been so much happening! After the cannons, we stayed in a place with lots of fireflies, something you don't see in California. Our evening walk took us to a giant cave.

The following day I met two dogs that belonged to my human papa's sister. Since we all got along, I spent the night in a house instead of the trailer. Then we drove to my papa's parents and stayed with them for a day. They really liked me and made sure to take me to their favorite park.

After that we kept driving till we made a stop near a Nebraska cornfield. The plants were way over my head. That night we stayed in a busy camping place near a lake and took a long walk along a dam wall. People had painted all sorts of things on the side of it.

Heading into Wyoming, my papa pulled into a rest area and we took a trail that ended up in a building. The humans got an interesting tour of something called an arkee-ologee site while I tried to catch flies. After more driving, we finally stayed put for a few days in a place down a dirt road by ourselves but near enough to a campground to get water so I saw other dogs and people every day. There were some small mountains nearby and big boulders and people were climbing on them using ropes. After that it was mostly driving and stopping for a little while, pulling off for the night near the freeway, until we finally got back to Nevada. It was really hot but the Two Leggers found a lake to camp at and we had a beach to ourselves!

The next day they stocked up on groceries and we went up into the California mountains for several days. We had some wonderful hikes and I got to swim in a river. My paws got used to rocks again. My human mama said she saw three beaver swimming upstream but I wasn't with her.

Alas, my freedom there didn't last. The humans headed down to Sacramento and I had to be chained up at the RV park when I was outside, a mostly gravel surface. However, they took me on leash-free walks or in my bicycle trailer to visit the daughters in between times so it wasn't all bad. Another drive back over the mountains to stay at a camping place with sand dunes near a lake and hills. I could've stayed there longer but for some reason the humans moved into a noisy RV park in town with more gravel. However, this one is better because there is more happening. We have to use empty lots or parking areas for me to be off leash. I have gotten a lot of rides in my trailer - the Bipeds have been going to look at different houses and having long discussions... Yesterday I got to play chase with a little dog at another place and that was fun.

Well that's the end of this long tail... Don't be chasing yours too long if you have stuff to do! Comet

Well, we’re not in Florida anymore. The Two Leggers took everything out of the house and put a lot of it in our trailer. We stayed in a place with woods the first night and it was heaven for me to run free. Then we stopped near a place that smelled like the sea that they called Pen-sa-kola. Last night we were in another campground with lots of tall trees and a lake but I didn’t get to swim. I did get to have a good chase after a dog but the Bipeds were mad at me because I ran across a road with fast drivers zooming by. They were looking at something called a "Civil War" site and you can see me near one of the cannons. I think the chase was worth it…

Guess that’s about all I can tell you ‘bout for now. Keep your cool! Comet
