Comet's Blog January to June 2009
June 15, 2009 The Big Dog Up In The Sky was making a lot of lightning and noise these past few weeks. Sometimes he got so loud I thought he'd come crashing through the roof! I didn’t growl or bark back though. Usually we got lots and lots of rain after that, much more than in California. All that rain left drinking puddles everywhere and kept things nice and cool.
The Two Leggers left me at home most of the time but that’s okay ‘cause they brought back food. My human papa’s been spoiling me with hot dogs.
The other day we went on a trip to some place called Georgia. The Bipeds drove to a beach where the water was kind of like the ocean but not as salty and there weren’t any waves. I had a pretty good time swimming as well as having one of my crazy fits on the beach where I grab up a stick and run at my Two Leggers as fast as I can and then whirl by them – I’ve been pretty frustrated having to be on a leash all the time when there are a zillion cats to chase…
After spending the night in a motel, I got to be off leash at a college campus that had lots of different trees and grass and a pond for swimming while my human mama went to do something called “taking exams.” I think we had much more fun than she did! Well, time for me to sign off till next time! Comet
May 15, 2009 The weather’s warming up around here, but luckily we had a big thunderstorm and lots of rain to cool things down a bit. On the really warm days my humans have been taking me swimming in the little lake near here and I just found a swimming hole at the giant dog park we go to as well, so life’s not too bad. I really love to swim! It drowns off some of those pesky fleas too. My Two Leggers flea comb me every day to keep me comfortable. Since they never know when I’m going to be swimming, they say it’s a waste to put that Advantage stuff on me.
Haven’t been too many places in the car lately except last weekend we went to dinner at someone’s house and then all the Bipeds played music. I was lucky enough to get some leftover shrimp – yummm. Wish we could go back there every day!
I learned a new game recently. During my morning walk, my mama throws a tennis ball against a wall and then I try to catch it after it bounces off. Sometimes I figure out where it’s going to bounce and catch it before she does. It’s more fun for me than regular fetch!
Well, I’m off for another walk and a swim – keep your cool if you can! Comet
April 15, 2009 Well, so much for swimming - it's actually been cooler than any of us thought. The closest I've gotten was when we went to the beach the week that the humans' younger daughter and her friend came to stay. I enjoyed that - lots of activity at home and different places to see in the car. We also took them on a bike ride and my trailer tipped going up onto a curb. I was fine but the trailer fabric scraped with a few holes. Fortunately, the humans were able to fix those. Our visitors got to see some real alligators at a restaurant on the river. The only one I've seen so far is this one in someone's yard...
I have a new monicker: Unofficial Therapy Dog. So many people cannot help but say, "What a beautiful dog!" when they see me, and a lot of them want to pet me. My Two Leggers warn them I may not like it but sometimes I let them and it makes these strangers so happy. I also make a lot of people laugh when I go by in the bicycle trailer!
Well, that's about it for this time. Will get back to you next month - till then, here's waggin' at ya - Comet
March 15, 2009 What a difference a month makes! Winter is definitely over down here. Now I'm just looking for places to go swimming (although I haven't given up scanning for cats at the same time).
It's been pretty routine, except I'm sometimes only getting two walks a day instead of three. But I can be outside in my favorite spot, which is under the deck, instead of being inside all day. I like digging there when I get excited about something. It's the one place where nobody follows me!
We did a few nice trips with me in the trailer, and have explored some new places with lots of good smells and a pond we didn't know existed. The Two Leggers have been doing some extra things with their music making friends. We went to one house where I was allowed inside and got to be the center of attention. At another place I had to stay in the car, but my human papa came out with bits of meat a few times so it wasn't too bad.
That's all for now - y'all take care of yourselves - Comet
February 15, 2009 Hooray, it's getting warmer again! It has been soooo cold here at night and in the daytime...
Highlights for this past month were taking a super long ride in my trailer across the river through different neighborhoods. A number of times we also went to the huge field that is like a combination dog park and a place for humans to practice hitting a little white ball with metal sticks.
My Two Leggers did a couple of things they don't usually do. One night they drove a long way and left me in the car for a while at something called a university. The next night they left me alone at home while they walked down the street to see a movie. I gave them my most reproachful look to let them know how deeply hurt I was at not being invited along. It didn't work.
There is a store that smells like chocolate around the corner. They had some huge critter walking around with a sign, like a giant tiger on two legs. It started whistling at me, like people do when they want me to come over - that freaked me out, so I started barking. I don't know why the Two Leggers thought that was so funny....
Last night we went for a walk to the riverfront. There were all kinds of people going into restaurants all dressed up. Some of them were going onto a big boat with lots of yummy food inside. The Bipeds told me I could forget about being invited on board. Too bad.
Well that's all the news this time around. We've been told it'll stay warm soon but I'll believe it when I feel it. Keep your tails waving! - Comet
January 15, 2009 Well, December is past so I can take my antlers off and just be a dog again... (I only had to wear them for photos, to tell the truth, but I thought that was still a bit much).
Life continues to be more fun now that I get to ride in my wagon. We go to the giant park more than we used to and often there are other dogs there to sniff or chase. Sometimes the two leggers get to talking with other ones and then we stay longer.
My mama has started something she calls "training" again. When we get to the morning park, which is not as big as the other one, I have to sit or lie down and wait for her to call me. Then when she says "Free!" I run like mad to her. Sometimes she sees me get up before she calls and takes me back to where I was and makes me stay some more. It's all worth it for the pepperoni.
Speaking of food, I am now eating no kibble at all! I guess my coat was greasy and my breath didn't smell good so now it's raw hamburger or chicken with some grated veggies and apple. Once a week I get some beef heart chunks, another day some liver, plus a raw egg with the shell crunched up three times a week. I also get some kind of pill and a brazil nut.
I've actually learned to chew bones without acting like they were going to bite me - did you know the marrow is good for dogs and chewing them helps keep teeth clean? I get some kind of bone in the middle of the day. My coat feels a lot softer, looks shinier, and I smell better. (I also have to poo less).
I've stopped shedding so much and have more energy, but we're not sure if that's because the weather turned colder again or the new food. By the way, I didn't used to eat any raw meat because it didn't look or smell anything like kibble - but it only took me one day to figure out that the new food was yummier - the two leggers just kept saying, "Eat it!" and didn't offer me anything else so I tried it.
Well, that's all the news from Florida this time around. Will keep you pawsted... Comet
