Comet's Blog January to June 2010

June 15, 2010

Yay, it's summertime! Bet that means more swimming for me.

We've had a lot of windy days in the past month but it hasn't stopped us from getting out.

On Memorial Day we went on a super hike that took most of the day. I did fine even though it was about a 4000 foot climb and down again. Here's me with the deer skull and antlers my Papa found. The best part was a long hill that had enough snow on it for us to slide down.

We made a trip in the car to see my human siblings. I was hungry and ate some pistachios that were left on a coffee table, shells and all. Boy did I regret that move - spent about three hours Saturday evening with stuff coming out either one end or the other at regular intervals... My Mama wasn't too happy because even though I managed to do it all outside, they were very manicured places and she had to clean it all up and missed the movie the others were watching.

The fun part was that they brought the bicycles and my cart so I got to go to something where there were lots of people walking around downtown Sacramento looking at art things and then the next morning we went to a big farmer's market.

Guess we'll see what comes up this next month. I think the Humans are going to do more outdoor stuff with me. Till then, keep your tail waving! Comet

How did another month go by so quickly? We think we're finally heading for warmer weather, but it sure is hard to tell. So far the temps have been dropping down about once a week. My humans call those "soup days" 'cause that's what they have for lunch when it's cold. Otherwise, they have "wrap days" where they put vegetables, cheese and salad dressing inside a tortilla. I'm not allowed to have any of that anymore, except grated raw veggies.

Whether it's cold and snowy or beautiful sunshine, my Papa (mostly) has been hauling me to off leash areas. It's finally occurred to me that the trailer will take me someplace fun, so if I think I'm due for recreation, I crawl in and wait, even if it's not hooked up to a bike and at an angle. Two Leggers, being what they are, think it's so cute -blecchh! A couple of times it's been pretty hot and there's a runoff pond where I've gone swimming.

We've only been to one hiking place outside of town this past month. My Mama kept going on about how there were four different colors of Indian paintbrush, whatever that is. I thought the hundred different smells were a lot more interesting! The daughter with the gentle hands and her boyfriend came to visit and I got to go and watch them eat breakfast at the cafe nearby. Even though I didn't get to share in the chow, it was nice to be included.

One other thing - the Bipeds have made gates so that when they leave me at home I have stay in the kitchen. They call it my "gated community" - it's more like a jail to me - something about how they don't like me peeing or vomiting on the living room carpet, which I only did a few times - don't see what the fuss is about...

Well, I'll report back next month. In the meantime, happy trails to y'all. Comet.

Although I am almost back to my old self, my digestive system seems to have changed. If I get too much food or more than two different things to eat in one day, I throw it back up. My Papa has just started me on pills he calls probiotics and they seem to be helping a little bit. I am chewing a lot of marrow bones - just getting the marrow mostly... On a hike last week I found a skull and picked it up and carried it all the way to the car. I had never done that before - my Humans teased me and said I'm becoming a real dog!

We went to visit the daughters again last week. On the way we stopped near a lake and a man came running over. He thought I was his dog that had gotten out and my Bipeds were taking him somewhere. His dog was born in the same town where my Humans picked me up from the pound and is only a year or so older so maybe we have the same parents! This dog is 10 percent wolf and sure looks a lot like me, including that inscrutable expression!

Right now there is a flock of sheep on the hill above where we live so I have to stay on leash until we are way past them. The Two Leggers found out they are keeping the grass down so we don't have a wildfire. They are very noisy!

Well, hope you are keeping busy and taking care of yourselves. Comet

Spring must be on its way - my Human Mama has been plucking chunks of loose fur out or trying to get me to stand still while she brushes me. I don't really like either procedure so run away and hide as soon as I can!

I've been working on getting my strength back and can pretty much hike again, although I'm no longer motivated to charge up hills.

My stomach has changed too - any time I eat just a little too much or get something outside of rice and canned dog food I throw it back up. So now I'm getting fed once a day and all my begging and reproachful looks are having little effect.

My Mama did try giving me a type of bone made of knotted socks dipped in bouillon and frozen. I really liked that, but she took it away from me because I was swallowing bits of sock - I growled at her to leave me alone and tried to look scary, but she took it away anyway.

Well, trust you are getting hints of warmer weather if you're north of the equator. Till next month... Comet

February 15, 2010
Well, I had a close shave in more ways than one early this month. The night before I vomited up my dinner - my Two Leggers thought it was because I drank too much water after I ate. I seemed fine the next morning, but by two in the afternoon I vomited up a whole lot of food and my stomach hurt. I couldn't close my eyes to take a nap but just tried to find patches of snow to lie on in the backyard. My Bipeds thought that I was done when I had some diarrhea, but then I started hemorraghing blood from my rear end. They drove me 45 minutes to an overnight vet.

The docs SHAVED the fur off one front leg and my neck. The leg part was so they could stick this IV needle in me. I had lost a lot of fluid and was quite weak so did not protest like I normally would. The neck was so they could see how dehydrated I was by pinching my skin and seeing if stayed up like a tent, which it did.

My Humans had to take me to a different vet in the morning. I was more alert, but had vomited again and was still oozing some blood. They kept me there all day with that IV in my leg. It was noisy and scary. Luckily the Two Leggers picked me up that evening. What a fast way for them to spend over $1,000!

The vet then told them I was still bleeding and might have cancer. My Humans were afraid she was right and both of them were crying. They decided to take me for one last walk and talked about having to put me down since they couldn't afford more vet bills. They even decided where in the backyard to bury me!

However, by the time they got me home, the bleeding had stopped, and I went to sleep - I was soooo tired. I slept for most of the next day but was able to eat a little food and didn't throw it back up. Since then I just kept getting better and better, able to take longer and longer walks.

Today I went for my first big hike since my ordeal and I felt just like my old self. Of course I'm pretty old (the chart in the vet office says I'm about 73), but there's life in this ole boy yet... To paraphrase the song, "The dog came back, we thought he was a goner, but he just couldn't stay away..." That's me thanks to the miracle of modern medicine! Hope y'all get a new lease on life this month too! Comet

I'm a day late again, oh well... It's been a cold month over here, which is fine with me. However, it's meant that it has been harder to get around because the snow and ice have been slow to disappear.

Still, my intrepid Bipeds have been getting out and about with me. We went on two local group walks where I was the only dog and I was allowed to run around off leash since these were along bike trails with fencing on either side.

Comet the pampered GSD Then my Human Siblings came with their partners and I really got to go hiking a lot since they had never been here and wanted to explore. I not only got my exercise, but I got spoiled as you can see from the photo! It's too bad they had to go back to Sacramento...It was fun having a houseful of people.

My Papa says more snow is expected next week so I'm sure we will be doing extra hikes while we can get around easily.

Happy trails to you! Comet
