Diarrhea remedy for dogs

by Brian
(Tiverton, Rhode Island)

My dog was having "loose stools" and I fed him ground beef and rice and it helped "firm him up."

Editor's note: Thank you, Brian. We have always been told to just feed plain rice for a dog with diarrhea for the first day or two, but if a dog can handle the beef too it seems like a better option since beef will provide protein and other things that rice will not.

Note that you might want to cook the beef just in case the dog's immunity is down - a vet recently advised us to do that with Comet since his digestive system is still coming back from his near-death experience in February. Also, you may want to pour off the grease if you are using ground beef high in fat and your dog's tummy is still upset. (We put the grease in a used plastic container and freeze it before we throw it out rather than letting it go down the sink. We also wipe out the pan with paper towel to absorb as much of the grease as possible before washing it.)
