Dog Bed Patterns: Pattern Instructions
Follow our dog bed patterns instructions to make your dog a bed!
| STEP 1: MEASURE, DECIDE, PRINT |

STEP 2: DRAW GRID LINES
- Get a pencil or pen and a ruler (if you tend to mess up a lot, a pencil is recommended)
- Starting with the horizontal line given, make marks at one-inch (or 2cm or 3cm) intervals along the outside frame – just make sure they are all the same distance
- Connect the dots so the lines you draw are parallel to the original horizontal line
- Now do the same with the vertical lines, starting with the center line that is already drawn for you
Note: The “center” lines may be off slightly. Do not worry about this. The main thing is for you to have a grid with lines spaced at regular intervals.
STEP 3: CREATE LARGER GRID
- Add 3 inches to your dog's measurements for seams and wiggle room
- Or add 5 to 6 inches if you want a bolster around the top
- Take the total measurements and look for numbers that divide evenly into both. Add or subtract an inch if you need to
Example:
Your dog’s height at the withers is 25 and you want a bolster, so your total measurement for the width (the horizontal center line) is going to be 30 or 31 inches. Nothing divides well into 31, but several numbers divide evenly into 30, such as 2, 3, 5, 6 and 10. Do the same with the dog’s length (the vertical measurement). If the dog’s length is 42, you can add 5 inches to get 47 or 6 inches to get 48. Looking for numbers that divide evenly into 30 and 48, we come up with 2, 3, 4, 6 and 12. Using 2-, 3- and 4- intervals would mean you’d have to draw a lot of grid lines which is not necessary since the patterns do not have that much detail. 12-inch intervals are a little far apart. So it would be best to use 6-inch increments for the new grid |
- Note that for the Round Dog Bed, length = width
- Create a grid using lines spaced the number of inches apart that worked out best for your dog's measurements. Draw the same number of lines that are used for the smaller pattern
STEP 4: TRANSFERRING THE PATTERN
- If you need to, number the blocks on both pieces of paper
- For each corresponding block, draw a piece of the pattern so it looks just like a larger version of the original
- Step back and check it when you’re done for mistakes. Include an eyeball check to see if it looks like it will fit your dog
- Darken the lines once you’re satisfied
