Dog Bed Patterns: Materials

Before you start buying or scrounging for dog bed patterns materials, there are four important things to determine:

Buy at Art.com
  1. The correct measurements for the shape you want to make

  2. The type of materials that will work for the covering

  3. What you plan to use for the stuffing

  4. What kind of fastener (zipper, Velcro, buttons) you want to use, if any, to insert and remove stuffing materials from the cover

COVERING MATERIALS

There are many different choices for the material that you make your dog bed out of. You know your dog and what will fit his or her needs best.

Things you may wish to consider about the fabric:
  • How durable is it?
  • Do you need it to be waterproof?
  • Is it strong enough for the dog’s weight and claws?
  • Is it washable or will it be easy to clean?
  • How will it handle fur?
  • Is it hypoallergenic?
  • Is there enough fabric to piece together given the measurements you have taken?

Here is a list of suggested covering materials with ideas for inexpensive ways to procure them:

  • Flannel or fleece
  • Upholstery fabrics – check thrift stores for inexpensive drapery or upholstery material in the sizes you need
  • Vinyl – you may be able to take apart an armchair or sofa for the fabric
  • Faux leather or leather – take apart an armchair or sofa
  • Terry cloth – used beach towels
  • Quilted fabrics – take apart a quilt no longer in use
  • Cotton or linen

STUFFING MATERIALS

Again, there are different materials that can be used:
  • Foam. For durability and comfort, high-density or memory foam is best. For a dog that has orthopedic issues, choose high-density foam that is at least 5 inches thick.*
  • Poly fiber fill
  • Foam peanuts
  • Stuffing from an old beanbag chair
  • Old quilts or sleeping bags
  • Rags and old socks (for the bolster)
*To test the compressibility of the sample they show you at the upholstery or foam shop, squeeze the piece from both sides with your hands in the middle of the foam sample, not at the edges.

BUTTONS, VELCRO OR ZIPPER?

This is basically your choice. If the fabric is very heavy it may be easier to add Velcro or buttons than a zipper. If you plan to use adhesive Velcro, we suggest you staple it to the fabric as well for best results.
