Use dog party hat decorations to add the finishing touches to our basic Dog Party Hats

Start by covering your cardboard-constructed hats with paper or cloth. These may be glued on or paper may be folded to mold to the hat and taped on the inside.

The covering could be enough decoration in itself if the cloth or paper is shiny and/or has patterns in it. However, if you feel like spending more time and want some creative options, read on!

The above were created from things we had on hand while camping. The first hat is decorated with fish bones; the second with cutouts from a newspaper advertising Halloween; the third from an empty dry milk box; and the fourth is also from an old newspaper. You'll likely come up with entirely different designs. Go for it!

FIRST THE TIES

  1. Mark holes 1/4 to 1/2 inch [5-10mm] up from the bottom edge so the ties go behind the dog's ears
  2. Punch the holes out with the nail or needle
  3. Add the ties and try the hat on your dog
  4. Fix any problems
  5. Remove the ties
  6. Start decorating!

POSSIBLE DECORATIVE ITEMS

  • Animals
  • Bows and Ribbon
  • Dried Flowers
  • Glitter
  • Hearts
  • Sequins
  • Stars
  • Things found in nature

ADDING WRITING

An additional idea is to get out paints, crayons and markers to make or enhance your dog party hat decorations. Some written things could be:
  • Bark It Up!
  • Have A Doggone Good Day!
  • Happy Dog Day!
  • Birthday Girl (or Boy)!
  • Puppy Celebration!
  • You're Adopted!
For drawings, you could do freehand designs or get stencils that you color in. Another idea would be to make your own stencil:
  1. Cut out a dog picture from a magazine or newspaper
  2. Paste it on a piece of cardboard (cereal or cardboard box)
  3. Cut out around the outline of the dog
  4. Use the cardboard outline as your stencil (try it out on a piece of paper first
After you've finished your embellishments, add your ties.

HAVE A GREAT DOG PARTY!!
