Our Experiences with Rescue Dogs

Stan and I raised a number of rescued dogs with uncertain parentage who came to us in a variety of ways.

Besides F.B. and Comet, who we had for some years, we also had Ranger and Rodney (acquired from a shelter) and Hal and Fudge (street strays) for brief periods, all of them mixed breeds of some kind.

We have a boatload of dog rescue stories since each furry pal had his or her own distinct personality!

A GSD and Chiweenie on a hike together.

Comet and Pebble on their only hike together - about a week before he passed away.

Ain't Misbehaving - I Just Need Training!

We found that those dogs acquired when they were older often had a behavioral issue or two, and those who were taken away from their litter at too young an age needed help with canine socialization.

The biggest behavior problem usually had to do with separation anxiety. Other challenges included dogs that were too aggressive with other dogs or cats, or very fearful of people.

In the beginning, we returned a couple of dogs (Ranger and Rodney) to the pound because we didn't realize there was a way to train them out of bad behaviors. Hal and Fudge were both escape artists and each finally succeeded in moving on after several months.

After those experiences, we figured out that time and training would be needed with any dog that became ours. This turned out to take care of most things, and we could live with the rest.

However, no matter how tough the dog, all of them found a place in our heartsWe are grateful to have had 13 years with F.B. and over 10 years with Comet. Comet was difficult to manage in regards to cats but was otherwise a wonderful companion...

We found out size doesn't matter either. Our latest little doggie, Pebble, a Dachshund/Chihuahua mix or Chiweenie, is quite spirited. We acquired her at a garage/moving sale - the owners didn't want her to end up in the pound. In her first hour with us, she bared her teeth and snarled to look as threatening as possible. I simply looked at her and said, "Get real -I'm waaay bigger than you." That was the end of that behavior!
