Easy Homemade Dog Treats Recipes:
Bread Squares

Use our easy homemade dog treats recipes to spread your dog's bread!

It's as simple as taking a piece of bread and adding some kind of topping. For more easy homemade dog treats recipes, see Easy Homemade Dog Treats: Cracker Backs

Just remember that grains are not a natural part of a dog's diet so these should be a very occasional treat, especially if your dog gets grain in their kibble. (See the Vegetable Smoothies and No Bake recipes for grain-free dog treats.)

THE BREADS

You’ll need some kind of human bread, the healthier the better. Save the heels that humans sometimes won’t eat to make these easy homemade dog treats recipes.

If a slice of bread seems hard and dry, put it in the microwave for about 10-15 seconds and it will soften up.

Make sure your dog is not allergic to any of the ingredients listed on the wrapper. If you’re not sure, feed just a little bit of the bread to your pooch and observe for signs of itching, abdominal discomfort, vomiting or diarrhea. It doesn't take much for a small dog to be affected. For more information, see Dangerous Foods for Dogs

Recommended treat portions for dogs is as follows:
  • Small dogs, under 20 lbs – 1/16 of a slice per day
  • Dogs 20-40 lbs – 1/8 of a slice per day
  • Dogs 40-90 lbs – 1/4 of a slice per day
  • Dogs over 90 lbs – 1/2 a slice per day
Cut pieces into any shape you like.

We recommend giving your dog a treat from one of these easy homemade dog recpies (love that typo!) no more than twice a day, unless you're using treats for training. To give them more often, cut the treats into tiny pieces and save them on a plate in the fridge in between doling them out.

THE TOPPINGS: SPREADS AND SLICES
