Melanie's baby Pictures

Here are some baby pics her owner sent me via e-mail. Her name used to be Bella but since my husband's Basset/Beagle's name is Ezebella Elizabeth, we call her Bella.

So we changed Bella's name to Melanie after a friend of mine who is a bloodhound officer for St. John's County Sheriffs office. She knew Justice's daddy too.

Thank you, Heidi - those are adorable! Jo

So enjoy the pics - I need one of her daddy too for her book.

Melanie is an AKC Yellow Lab, her daddy is a retired K-9 drug sniffing dog from St. Johns County.

She will be used to be my mobility dog bring me things I have dropped, also fetch things if I need anything brought to me.

She goes to church with me, lies on her blanket under the pew, even goes to SS with me too.

Next to that she likes to go to Dollar General, IGA, Winn Dixie, Publix, Lowe's, and sometimes even Home Depot. Petsmart is an excitable place - all new doggie smells and also doggie toys etc.

She has gone through a lot of rope toys so I want to learn to make some now and need to get her a Kong too.

She is a smart gal, her B-day is Nov 13th where she will be 3 years old.

I do love Melanie so much, she looks like my lady bug who lost her life to cancer at the bridge last year and sometimes she has some of her characteristics too.

Will post more photos later on of her. Melanie even sleeps by my feet on our queen size bed. When I am really aching, she lies up full length next to me on one side of me too - she is just my lovable Melanie.

Melanie's Outings

by Heidi
(Jacksonville, Fl. USA)

Well on Saturday we went into Home Depot, Kohls, and Target and she did fine in all 3 stores. She just got near me in Home Depot when she heard the beep of the big truck that goes up and down the aisles. We will do more of Home Depot later on too.

In Kohls she let 3 girls pet her who thought she was so pretty. In Target she did great too. Even in PetSmart she did great; she did not pee or poo on the floor at all but smelled all other places dogs have gone, a couple of toys on the ground too. Told her to leave it - she did. Then one dog came up to greet her,I said, "She is a good dog," and then we went on our way. A lady dropped a rawhide in front of her - I told her "Leave it!" and she did.

At check out I dropped my Pets perk card - she got it for me. I told her tp give it and she gave it to me. I am happy on that one as we were working on it.

Will soon give an update on our homecoming services at church. You all will LOL at that one she was so good too. Heidi

Heidi, thanks for sharing about Melanie. Looking forward to hear about what happened at church! Jo

Well Miss Viki picked me up with Patches her service dog. We have been friends since 2004 and are like sisters.

We went into 2 thrift stores all went OK. I had to learn to step on Prissy's leash some more and she was good till near the end. Then she was getting antsy, but she stayed under the table.

Then we walked to another store, Family Dollar, who gave us glances and looks when we went in. Prissy walked some, then sat down some. I ended up picking her up. Wrong thing to do - I will not do that when she is fully grown - she will have to learn to walk on a leash better.

We also went into a Dr's office she was so well behaved. I know when she got home she fell fast asleep. Below is a picture of her and also her sister who will be my husband's service dog, Princess. They both have a lot to learn.

I will be coming back here to learn new things and make new things for I love to work with my hands too. Also have other dogs. Cats too.

Hugs
Prissy's mommy Heidi

Good luck with the training, Heidi, and thanks so much for sharing the story - we hope to hear more! Jo

Melanie's voting day and Senior Expo day

by Heidi
(Jacksonville (Jax), FL)

Well Miss Melanie made everyone at Supervisor of Elections smile. First she hit the square button to go on in. We walked up to get my paper to vote on. The ladies all petted her and then the Supervisor hugged her. After all, the Supervisor of Elections and us go to the same church. His wife and I were in the same SS class too - Brenda Collins in the 1980's. After that, Melanie hit the button again to open the door to go out. I am so proud of her hitting the square things to open up the door when she is used to the big round ones instead.

We walked around and she did her business outside, just peeing. A cop saw us and said how well behaved she was.

Next we went into the Senior Expo - oh what a crowd! Melanie did great walking around, stopping at booths with no jumping up. She quickly made friends with Joy, a lady that shows pups and cats on Channel 4 news from Animal Care and Protective Services; then made friends with cops in the dark blue uniforms, the reserve ones in white, and the tax collectors in the denim shirts. I got asked, "What type of dog is she?" "A yellow lab, of course!" Also, "Does the prong collar with the hands free leash hurt her?" "No, it does not" and had to explain why - the choke one can damage their trachea. We made tons of friends with no accidents at all.

After we left there, we had to stop by a store to get a few groceries, so we went into Publix. She did great in there too. She still does not like the freezer section much so we'll do more of them later on in different grocery stores.

We came on home, then Melanie slept rest of the night from 5 PM on. But she loved making all those friends. The only thing she does is sit when people pet her and she needs to learn to stay standing. Once she gets her circle harness from TX she will be able to stand better. She is a lovable and loyal companion - I am so glad I have Miss Melanie in my life. She does alert me with a slight lean on my right leg so I can find a place to sit right then and there.

More to come as we do more outings later on.

Loved your account of this outing, Heidi, and we look forward to more updates! Jo

My New Service Puppy

(Jax, FL)

My new Service Puppy is 8 weeks old today, 5-20-09, and weighs 8.2 lbs.

She is named Prissy Leanora, a lab golden mixed matched puppy. She is the most affectionate puppy. Also Miss Prissy is good on outings - she does not bark or whimper just lies down and goes to sleep. She comes when she is called. I roll a tennis ball to her - she brings it to me but the fuzz sometimes get on her puppy teeth. Prissy sleeps beside me on one of the older dogs pets beds.

She is going to be a good service dog.

Melanie and her Church Outings

by Heidi
(Jacksonville, FL)

Melanie, my yellow Lab who is my balance and mobility dog, and I went to our homecoming service May 1st. The little church we go to in Baldwin was packed. Good music, good preaching too. When it was time to walk up and take communion, I decided to walk instead of having them bring it to me. We were down almost to the front of the church. A lady had her hand draping over the pew. Well Melanie just sniffed it and the lady looked up and gave me a huge smile :). I was glad.

After that we stood in a buffet line in fellowship hall, and she didn't touch the food at all. When a little boy dropped an olive, I told Melanie "Leave it!" She did - walked right past it - then she laid down right under the round table without being told to.

After we ate I walked her around some, then fed and gave her some water in our truck, walked her some more, then back for the closing song. A man sang the Lord's Prayer. Such a beautiful song.
Also had some people ask me did she eat anything or drink anything? I replied, yes, like my sister Viki told them no human food when asked if they could give her a small bite of a cookie, a piece of ham, etc. just "No, thank you." But had to LOL at touching the lady's hand.

Got to educate so many people that day on Service Dogs and what they do; so many are just used to guide dogs and I told them differently. But a good many of the congregation coming back for a visit to their home church told me they didn't even know there was a dog in the church as she is so well behaved. I just said thank you for saying that about my Service Dog.

Coming soon: her first voting day and Senior Expo
