Home made traditional milk bones

by Jordan Pruitt
(Illinois)

These are cheap, simple treats that are safe. I have made many for local animal shelters and my dog and they love them.

You will need the following:
3/4 cup of hot water
1/2 cup of powdered milk
1 teaspoon of salt
1 egg beaten
3 cups of whole wheat flour.

Here is what you do:
In a large bowl, pour the hot water over the powdered milk and stir until mixed. In 1/2 cup intervals, add the flour until a stiff dough forms. (You may need more than listed.)
Put flour on the surface of the table and dust the top of the dough with the flour.
Roll the dough with a rolling pin into a layer 1/2 inch thick. (If you don't have a rolling pin, use a plastic cup.)*
Cut into bone shapes or use a cookie cutter.
Bake at 325 degrees. (Electric ovens should be at 320 degrees.)
Do this for 50 minutes (or 45 minutes for electric stoves).
The bones will harden as they cool.
ENJOY!

Editor's note: Thank you for this bone-a-fied recipe, Jordan!! These sound like they will be delightful treats and, as you said, inexpensive and easy to make. We would recommend, however, that you cut the amount of salt by half and use different spices such as oregano, basil, thyme, dill and even a little garlic instead. Just do NOT use onion powder.

*Note: We have successfully used an empty wine bottle as a rolling pin too.
