Homemade Dog Biscuits
Make homemade dog biscuits to give your dog a tasty alternative to some of the commercial varieties. You can also put them in a gift basket for a friend’s dog(s). To keep him at a healthy weight, we feed Comet sparingly outside his main diet. We learned this lesson from F.B. our black Lab (see
About Us)
When F.B. was 10 years old, he gained some weight and had a lot of trouble with his joints. He'd howl in pain when he got up off his couch. After we slimmed him down, his joint problems stopped and did not recur. Since you most likely have control over what your dog eats, why not make him or her healthy dog biscuits that taste yummy? From what we've read, onions are toxic to dogs and the effect can be cumulative - something to do with bursting red blood cells - so we'll not be using any in our recipes. Garlic, which is related to onion, seems to be less potent, but we'd rather err on the side of caution. Comet doesn't seem to care what we've left out as long as there's some flavoring like cheese or another herb! Here's the first recipe:
SPINACHIOS
INGREDIENTS - 1/2 10 oz package frozen chopped spinach or
- 1/2 bunch fresh spinach, well rinsed
- 1 egg
- 1 cup stone-ground whole wheat flour
- 1 oz cup grated sharp cheese (about 1x1 inch cube)
- 1/3 cup vegetable, olive or Canola oil
TO MAKE AND BAKE- Preheat oven to 350 degrees
- Thaw the frozen spinach or chop the fresh spinach
- Put in a mixing bowl with the other ingredients
- Mix well
- Spray cooking oil into standard size or mini muffin tins
- Divide the mixture evenly and press into the tins
- Bake for about 10 minutes or until firm

These biscuits keep quite well in the fridge. They may become hard after a couple of days. Comet likes them soft or crunchy. We have no other homemade dog biscuit recipes as yet, but we do plan to develop more. In the meantime, why not try our
