Homemade Dog Biscuits
Make homemade dog biscuits to give your dog a tasty alternative to some of the commercial varieties. You can also put them in a gift basket for a friend’s dog(s).
Since you have control over what your dog eats, why not make your own dog biscuits that taste yummy?
From what we've read, onions are toxic to dogs and the effect can be cumulative - something to do with bursting red blood cells - so we'll not be using any in our recipes. Garlic, which is related to onion, seems to be less potent, but we'd rather err on the side of caution. Comet doesn't seem to care what we've left out as long as there's some flavoring like cheese or another herb!
It's easy to learn how to make dog biscuits. Just follow the recipes:
SPINACHIOS
INGREDIENTS
- 1/2 10 oz package frozen chopped spinach or
-
1/2 bunch fresh spinach, well rinsed

1 egg
-
1 cup stone-ground whole wheat flour
-
1 oz cup grated sharp cheese (about 1x1 inch cube)
-
1/3 cup vegetable, olive or Canola oil
TO MAKE AND BAKE
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees

Thaw the frozen spinach or chop the fresh spinach

Put in a mixing bowl with the other ingredients

Mix well
-
Spray cooking oil into standard size or mini muffin tins
-
Divide the mixture evenly and press into the tins

Bake for about 10 minutes or until firm

Let cool
These biscuits keep quite well in the fridge. They may become hard after a couple of days. Comet likes them soft or crunchy.

Here's another of our homemade dog biscuits:
DOGGIE CHEESE WAFERS
INGREDIENTS
- 4 oz grated cheese
-
4 Tbsp flour (whole wheat, brown rice, rye or graham)
-
5 Tbsp olive, vegetable or canola oil
-
Spices such as oregano, sage, dill to taste
TO MAKE AND BAKE
- Mix the ingredients well and knead together.

Divide the dough in two and roll between your palms until you create logs about an inch (25 mm) in diameter each.

Put the logs in the freezer for at least 20 minutes (or leave them in the fridge overnight).

When you are ready to bake the wafers, preheat the oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit.

Cut the logs into slices about 1/4 inch (6 mm) thick.

Place the slices onto a cookie sheet or pizza pan.

Bake for 8 minutes and check.

Wafers should be golden in the middle and light brown around the edges when done.
These biscuits usually go fast. You can freeze or refrigerate them if there are any left.
