How To Make Dog Treats:
Freeze 'Em!

Learn how to make dog treats that you freeze!

Below are some free recipes that explain how to make dog treats that are healthy and refreshing on a hot summer day.

They'll leave your dog begging for more without expanding his or her waistline.

The main equipment you'll need are ice cube trays and a working freezer. Note that the trays can be filled to whichever level you want. For quicker freezing, a shallow layer is best.

BROTH CUBES

Ingredients:

1/2 to 1 1/2 C clear broth per ice cube tray

"Broth" can mean any of the following:
  • Beef, chicken, or vegetable broth made from scratch
  • Very low or no sodium bouillon cubes or canned broth
  • Vegetable water left over from steamed vegetables or boiled potatoes
  • Add spices as desired; with the exception of onion and garlic powder (toxic to dogs) and hot spices, anything goes
Directions:
  1. Distribute bouillon evenly in ice cube tray compartments
  2. Freeze until solid
  3. If desired, especially for smaller dogs, chop up into chips by placing cubes in a thick plastic bag and hitting with a hammer

JUICY SQUARES

Okay, so maybe these are rectangular but let's pretend...

Ingredients:

1/2 to 1 1/2 C juice per ice cube tray

Directions:
  1. Distribute juice evenly in ice cube tray compartments
  2. Freeze until solid
  3. As with the above, you can make chips out of the cubes
  4. Natural fruit juices such as apple, berry, guava, kiwi, mango, orange, or combinations of these
  5. Add texture with unsweetened grated coconut or other kinds of grated nuts or finely grated carrot

YOGURT DICE

Be aware that many dogs are lactose intolerant so they may get gas or diarrhea from milk products. It's best to give your dog a very small amount and see how she or he does before giving a whole cube.

Ingredients:

1/2 to 3/4 C plain yogurt per ice cube tray
1/4 to 3/4 C other ingredients (see below)

Directions:
  1. Distribute yogurt evenly in ice cube tray compartments
  2. Freeze until solid
  3. As with the above, you can make chips out of the dice
Yogurt lends itself well to adding other ingredients.
Keep the quantity to a total of 1 1/2 cups.
Ingredients that can be mixed in with the yogurt are:
  • Mashed fruit such as bananas, berries, peaches, and pears
  • Natural fruit juices (see JUICY BOXES)
  • Finely grated fruits and vegetables such as apples, broccoli, carrots, sweet potatoes or yams
  • Grated nuts such as almonds or unsweetened coconut
  • Combinations of the above such as orange juice with grated carrot
  • Spices such as nutmeg or cinammon added to the apples
Some of these these treats sound so good I think us humans will be begging for them too!
