Leftover treats that remove tartar

by Jean

I start with chicken fat, skins and scraps (I have started using neck bones too as I understand they are not harmful). Then I add leftovers like rice, carrots and other veggies and maybe leftover bread, etc. Add an egg and extra flour to desired consistency. Flavor with salt, sugar. Roll into balls and bake at 350 degrees. If I am too busy I just put in a casserole dish and slice later. When cool I put them in the freezer for anytime treats.

After giving him treats regularly, I have noticed that my dog's teeth are super clean - no tartar at all and he is 4 years old. What a great side effect. And he loves the frozen consistency!

Editor's note: How wonderful to get a homemade dog treat recipe that helps with a dog's teeth! Thank you, Jean - it's also exciting to receive a dog photo from beautiful Belize!

I had not heard that chicken neck bones were harmless for dogs when cooked - will have to look into that - I thought it was just when they are raw...

Also, I was thinking for those who do not want to use sugar or salt as flavoring, fresh or dried parsley and oregano could be good substitutes, as well as some grated cheese.

Anyway, many thanks for the recipe! I will try this with Pebble when we run out of bones...

Jo
