Make Dog Collars:
Nylon Collar

Easily make dog collars out of nylon webbing.

Just get some webbing, a slider and a buckle and you've got what it takes. We're using plastic fasteners in the instructions but metal can be used instead and is recommended for dogs that are very strong and pull hard suddenly in one direction or another when being walked.

You may be able to find everything to make a homemade nylon collar off an old backpack or gym bag. Local thrift stores or yard sales are often good, cheap sources of these items.

These instructions appear long, but that's only because every teeny step is broken down for you.

Comet says, "Enough chitchat already, show our visitors how to make dog collars already!"...

NYLON COLLAR INSTRUCTIONS

ESTIMATED TIME
  • 1/2 to 2 hours
MATERIALS
  • Approximately 2 feet (600mm) of nylon webbing
  • 2 Sliders
  • 1 Plastic buckle
  • 1 D-Ring
Note: Your hardware needs to be the right width to fit your webbing

TOOLS NEEDED

  • Scissors
  • Matches or gas burner to sear ends of webbing
  • Wet sponge to pinch seared ends
  • Needle with thread that matches the color of your webbing
  • Optional: Sewing machine with same color thread
COST OF MATERIALS
  • Approximately 5 USD if all items purchased
INSTRUCTIONS

FIRST END

  • Thread your nylon webbing through the D-ring
  • Decide which is the top side of the buckle
  • Thread the webbing through the slot of the receptacle part of the buckle
  • Fold the webbing under itself 1 1/2 inches (38mm) past the D-ring
  • Start sewing a line, making sure the webbing lies squarely on top of itself
  • If using a sewing machine, use Reverse to go back over your line
  • Sew forward over your line again
  • Make a rectangle and cross pattern, going over each line 3 times
  • Using double thread, hand sew a line closer to your D-Ring and go back over it
OTHER END

  • Decide which is the top end of your slider
  • Thread the remaining end of your webbing up through the first slot and down through the second
  • Move the slider down about eight inches (200mm)
  • Thread webbing from the bottom through the first slot then down from the top through the slot closest to the prongs of the other half of your buckle
  • Slide this part of the buckle down about five inches (125mm)
  • Pull out a loop of the webbing that is already in the slider
  • From underneath your slider, thread the webbing up through the further slot and down through the one closer to the buckle
  • Make a big loop out of the top webbing between the slider and buckle
  • Sew down the end of your webbing onto the lower webbing coming out of the buckle. Be careful not to sew into the top strap.

  • Go and try it on your dog!
