Raised Doggie Car Seat

by Nanci
(Indiana, U.S.)

I wanted to build a raised platform for a car seat that would allow my Type A rat terrier, Mister Dude (an appropriate name for his attitude), to see out the car, but yet hold him safely in place.

I got a heavy duty plastic storage box that wedges nicely between the dash and the back of the seat. Then I filled it with a foam rubber pillow wrapped in polar fleece fabric.

Then fashioned a short piece of webbing with a fastener on each end. One end attaches around the headrest post and the other smaller one down to hook on Dude's harness.

It works beautifully!!!

Adaptation for the back seat
by: Shari

For those of us that don't allow pooch in the front seat: you can make the car seat for the back seat. Instead of wedging against front dash. Use any kind of heavy duty strapping, attach to car seat, bring it down and attach under the front of the backseat. (need to sew good size clip to the strap.)

Helps with motion sickness

Every time I would take my Tibetan Terrier Barnaby for a ride in the car he would drool excessively, hyperventilate (not pant), and become very lethargic. I found out its because of motion sickness caused by not being able to see the direction in which he is traveling. He's too short to see out the window. Such a good idea about the plastic crate and foam. Now he can ride in the car without turning green. LoL

"Allowing your dog to ride in the front seat of the car can be very dangerous, especially if the airbag is deployed. As with infants and children, the back seat is safer. Without a picture, it's hard to tell how well this design restrains or protects the dog in case of an accident. Please think about adapting this design for the back seat and/or adding a way to attach a harness so the dog isn't thrown out in case of a sudden stop."

Before starting to nag and whine you should have read the post more carefully: What part about the webbing attached to the dog's HARNESS and the headrest didn't you get?

Thanks for the great idea!

My doggie, Jasper, loves to ride in the front seat but has to sit on somebodies lap to see out the window and this would help if I'm driving by myself!
