Shinda

by Angela
(NY)

Shinda? Is that a stupid name? No, it means to overcome, duh... My dog and I like to go for walks together on nice sunny days. We play around in the house but Shinda loves to bite up everything. I got her a ball last week and she bit it in half. Every time I get her a toy it ends up breaking the next day. But I still get her things because I dont want her to feel left out from everybody else when they get things.

Editor's note: Hi Angela, thanks for telling us about Shinda and what the name means! It sounds like she's either teething or likes to chew - you may want to check out our dog toy ideas - they are usually very inexpensive to make and easy to replace...

Once in a Lifetime

by YouDon'tNeedToKnowThough

My dog is an incredible dog. She is a mixed breed, a pudgy one too, and is one of the only two puppies to survive from her mother's litter.

So far in her life, my dog has...
-Rescued a baby possum
-Done a flip
-Held off a large dog
-Chased plenty of cats
-Used two collars
-Worn hundreds of outfits, (and enjoyed it.)
-Slept with my guinea pig
-Allowed my budgie to sit on her head
-Been an incredible friend

So you see? She's a little survivor who's accomplished so much in 5 short years. She means the World to my family and I, and I know that a dog like her comes around once in a lifetime.

Josie Wales
An Angel Sent From Heaven

by Carli
(Lake Holcombe, WI)

As I look back in life, I remember my luck with friends. It wasn’t exactly good luck and it wasn’t exactly bad luck either. I have a way with people, making them happy when they are sad, helping the less understanding and assisting the capable. But for some reason best friends rarely play a role in my life. They seem to come and go. Move away or just walk away from what I thought was good. They just never seem to stick. Why, I don’t know. My personality really doesn’t fit the everyday girl. That’s why my closer friends are usually guys.

I have angels in my life that are not best friends but are much more than that. They light up the meanest, darkest, and loneliest parts of me even when I’m at my wits end. I currently have two angels. My grandpa is one of them which I cherish with all of my heart. The other is special. She is that sunshine that pokes through the blackest clouds. That piece of hope that surrounds my negativity and failure. I don’t know how she does it but she was sent to help me. She is not human, she is my dog. She is not exactly famous to the world, but the small place she lives in, she knows her people and her people know her. Everyone who has seen her serial talent knows she is special. She knows her time and place. She is gentle, kind, and caring. But from time to time she makes trouble like any kid would do. She gets in trouble, takes the punishment, and moves on to continue working her magic. Tolerant and understanding she proves that time is something that can not be wasted but is to be cherished with the utmost care. In her years, she has shown that death is not in her vocabulary. Giving up is not capable, and doing what needs to be done without explanation can be expectable. Holding your head high, doing what is asked even if you don’t want to, and making the best of everyday situations is what drives you to the next day. It was once said that no matter what you look like, no matter how rich or poor you are, your dog will love you just the same. This is Josie Wales.

Now Josie has been through a lot. A twisted stomach almost claimed her life and she was on the losing end. But she came through. She has chased coyotes away from our house. She is used as a hunting dog. She has gotten into a porcupine once and that was out of curiosity, and the second time she was protecting our one year old german shorthair lab mix named Tess. Josie pulls a sled, wagons, she carries bags, rides in our wheelbarrow and loves to ride on our snowmobiles. She loves my grandpa and loves to fish with us. She has an endless personality and energy. She is patient and willing. When i was younger she used to carry my backpack from the school bus to our house. She loves the water and boat rides. She is a perfect example of strength, courage, and loyalty and I'm sure her breed is very proud. Oh, and did i mention that she is the runt of the litter. There is so much more to tell about her. She has a story that many should hear. I want to tell the world her story and I am currently working on it.

Star Dog

by Kaitlyn
(Phoenix)

My dog's name is Hannah. My name is Kaitlyn. I like to play with her. She likes to wear her star clothes. I like her.

Editor's note: Hi Kaitlyn! Thank you for sharing your dog story and the cute photo. We would love to hear more about her star clothes - did you or someone else make them? Do they look like a shirt or a dress, or a skirt and top? (You can use the Comment section to reply).

Please note that I changed the writing from all capitals to lower case. That is because on the Internet, if you type in all caps people think you are shouting at them...

My Granddaughters' Dog

by Jaclyn Burdick
(Barker, NY, USA)

They love me.

They love me.

My husband and I were blessed with 3 newcomers in our life when we were given our grand girls in our home. Our Andy dog, whom we had dearly loved, had passed away. The girls were lost. They were taken from their home and knew their best friend had passed. So my husband and I and the girls looked for another dog.

We went to a home and found this cute little black curly dog. One grand baby in particular knew what she wanted - and she just loves this dog. I told her I would be back - she didn't understand that I was going to get this little bundle of fur. She just cried and cried till I showed her that I went and bought the black curly dog that was no bigger than a football. The smile on her face said it all. (We still have all 3 children.)

Editor's note: Jaclyn, thanks for sharing this heartwarming story. Your granddaughters (and your dog) are fortunate to have such caring people in their lives.

Momma Dog without the puppies

by Sara
(Shoreline, WA)

We lived in a duplex in Seattle, WA. Our dog Kenai came to us through a friend. Turns out she was at a loving home with an unloving dog. Her owners were going to take her back to the pound when one of their friends said "No! wait, I can find a home for her!" So she brought her over.

She had a long back, short legs, big paws and HUGE ears. She may have been unproportional but my mother fell in love. We didn't know ANYTHING about her; we didn't even know her age. She looked like a younger dog; maybe around 4 years old. But boy were we wrong! My dad trained her and she picked up everything so fast. When her puppy teeth fell out we realized how young she was! And one day, we also realized that she was incredibly smart; more like Lassie than an ordinary dog.

It was Christmas Eve and we had just come back from my grandmother's. As soon as we came in, we knew something was wrong. Kenai was nipping our clothing and barking loudly towards a small end table that was covered with a table cloth. My father looked under it and saw a litter of 6 kittens. Momma cat had run off and Kenai was the only one left. The runt of the litter was as big as a sticky note.

Later that night when my dad went to check on the kittens, they weren't in the box we had placed them in. Where could they be? My dad searched and started to worry. He looked under the dining room table to find Kenai with 6 little kittens snuggled in her fur trying to nurse with the runt by her face as she tried to warm him up. She took care of the kittens until the momma cat came home but Momma Cat just wasn't interested. So Kenai took care of the kittens (with help from us of course - she was like an auntie) till they were old enough to go to good and loving homes. Since then, Kenai has proved more and more to be like Lassie. I sure will miss her when she goes.

Let's hope it's a good long while before that happens, Sara. Remember, optimum nutrition, minimal vaccinations, and exercise can go a long way toward helping your dog live the longest life possible...

Browine: When I got a dog

by Samantha
(NJ)

I got a dog named Browine and brought her home and I was happy :)

Hello Samantha - we are curious so have some questions:

What does Browine do to make you happy?
What does she look like?
What color is she?
Is she tall or small, round or skinny?
Do her ears stand up or do they flop down?
Is she a puppy or an older dog that you got from an animal shelter or somewhere else?
Is she a purebred dog or is she a mixed breed?
How do you take care of her - are you the one who feeds her, walks her, trains her?
What are you planning to make for her?

(If you'd like to reply to any of these questions, simply add them in the Comments. Thanks!) Jo

He's A Survivor

by Taylor
(TN )

My dog Jake is the best dog ever. He was run over when he was a little older that a pup. It was a hit and run. But the special thing about Jake is that he LIVED. He broke some things but he's ok. He is the sweetest dog you'll ever meet. I love him and so do my mom, my dad, and my two younger brothers. We couldn't give him up for a thousand dollars. He's too precious to the family. And he will be part of the family until death do us part. LOVE you JAKE

Taylor, thank you for writing in about Jake. We were wondering if you could tell us a little more, though. Things like:
What color coat and eyes does he have?
Is he a mixed breed or a purebred dog?
How old is he?
Was he living with your family when he got run over?
What things does he like to play with?
Is he ever naughty?

Just respond in the Comments section - thanks!
Jo
