Charlie the American Staffordshire Terrier

by Joseph Bates
(Idaho Falls, Idaho)

Charlie at school

Charlie at school

This is a second post for me about my other dog, Charlie. He is a 3 1/2 yr old male AmStaff.

This is a pic of us at the DoDD school. We were giving a demonstration to a second grade class about “the A,B,C’s of meeting a strange dog”. As you can see from the pic, Charlie is wearing his backpack (full of cheese crackers). The kids had to do the A,B,C’s properly and then got to pull a cracker packet out of the backpack.

It was hugely rewarding, especially when a handicapped boy got to meet my Charlie. He was so excited and it was truly wonderful to see.

We have also done this for a local Cub Scout Den.

Best,

Joseph Bates, TSgt, USAF

Me and Kaja the Rat Terrier

by Alyssa

The crazy little Kaja on Christmas Eve

The crazy little Kaja on Christmas Eve

So. I have a crazy little rat terrier. She loves to play. Her favorite game is tug-of-war. She loves to meet people. Kaja also loves to be with her family. But she is the most crazy, strangest dog EVER. That's ok because I am the most crazy, strangest kid ever. I love her.

Me and Kaja are the best of friends. I am even going to write a song about her. It will be called ME AND KAJA. That is all I have to write about Kaja for now.

The Hamper Sleeper

by Sierra
(Willis, Texas, United States)

Hamper Sleeper

Hamper Sleeper

My name is Sierra. My Yorkie, Elvis, is what I call a "Hamper Sleeper". He sleeps in anything, but he loves to sleep in hampers. Whenever he hears "laundry", he sits by the washer and dryer and hops in the hamper. I made him a bed of blankets and pillows, but he preferred the hamper. When I'm in the laundry room, he sits down in front of me and whines. So I have to get the laundry out of the dryer and get out the hamper. Elvis loves hampers. So watch out when you're doing laundry. He's a hamper-seeking-missile (sonar included)!!!

Me and Kaja the Rat Terrier #2

by Alyssa
(Oregon)

A few days ago I got another dog called Mollie. At first Kaja nipped at Mollie and wouldn't let her get some love, but a couple days later she got over it. Now that they're both geting along, we put them in training. We're training them to wait for us at the bottom of the stairs, and to wait for us to go through the door first. They have been doing well, but we're going to sign up for dog basics. Kaja doesn't know anything except "stay". Mollie knows "sit" and is house trained. In a few months i think they will be great dogs. They just need some training.

PS. Kaja is pronounced (kie yu)

Editor's note: We think it's wonderful that you're making sure to have well trained dogs. It takes extra time in the beginning but is so much easier on you in the long run.

Rocket, my jack russell terrier

by robyne lee
(england)

taken a few weeks ago

taken a few weeks ago

Rocket is a five month old jack russell puppy and ive had him since he was 8 weeks. He is really special to me as he helped me cope with the loss of my old labrador who i had for 11 years, and im only 16.

He makes me laugh with all the crazy things he does, mainly when he goes hyper and runs round like crazy. Even though he only turned 5 months last week, he has already learned to sit, lay down, give paw, and point to the hand with the treat in it, his name, recall (most of the time) and to go to the toilet outside.

I still have moments when i feel low because of my old dog, i just have to see Rocket and everything seems better.

Run Away Rat Terrier!

by Ms. Sock Lady
(Texas)

Part One of the made up story about Socky:

my dog is a rat terrier and is very adventurus and loves to dig. every time he's in the house he always manages to get out. i always have clothes on him because he's my little baby. (the clothes are made out of socks so everyone knows him as socky.)

when ever he leaves he always carries one of our socks in his mouth where ever he could find one. he'll sit there and play tug-a-war with the socks too. that's how the clothes started out. so every one knows him as socky because he wears socks and also carries them!

Editor's note: To see Ms. Sock Lady's idea for how to make dog clothes out of socks, go to the Dog Clothes button at left and look near the bottom of the page.

Dear lil Karma

by Rose
(Hazelton, Yarmouth, Nova Scotia)

Hi, I would just like to tell you a little story about my Karma, a 10 month old registered Yorkshire Terrier. She was healthy as can be. 2 weeks ago I got a phone call saying my nephew had an accident at work and was not expected to pull through. So I flew out the door for the hospital. When I returned home the garbage was all over the house; coffee grounds, and just garbage.

That night she threw up; I just thought it was from the garbage, but next day by noon she was throwing up every ten minutes.

I called the vet. They couldn't see her until 10:30 the next day. By supper time she had loose stools and by midnight it had small amounts of blood.

So I called an out of town vet and he said he would see her at 8. I fell asleep and when I woke up at 6 it looked like a murder scene. So much blood!

I wrapped her in a blanket and left for the vet; it took 40 min to get there. I told him the story of the garbage and the coffee grounds.

He insisted it was parvo, I said it wasn't.

I knew my dog - she was with me 24/7, but he insisted so he did the test, which came back negative. Anyway he said leave her here and i will see what i can do. At supper time I called and they said she was alert and sitting up so they were going to unhook her. At 8 am I got a call - she didn't make it through the night.

Like I said I knew my dog and I'm sure it was the coffee grounds, so be very careful this season... I miss her so much it hurts my heart. I hope I saved just one puppy in memory of my dear little Karma...thank you for reading.

Editor's note: Rose, we are so sorry for your loss (your nephew too if he did not make it) and that the vets were not cooperative. You did your best to advocate for your dear little dog.

Jack Jack's sudden death

Jack Jack, a rescued Rat terrier, lived with us for 3 years. He was a special needs baby, on phenobarb for seizures, and other weird behaviors. It is so hard to describe Jack Jack. I have 3 other dogs, yet he moved into the top spot. He needed more than my $1000.00 King Charles Cavalier Spaniel. Yes, he had special needs, handicapped, retarded, or whatever you call a weird dog.

I don't want to go into his weird behaviors, just
how much he was loved. He died yesterday, June 28, 2011, after suffering uncontrolled seizures. I feel very much responsible because I did not take him to the Vet soon enough. I thought he would respond to extra phenobarb. I had worked the night shift, and for all I know now, he may have seized all night.

Anyway, I got to hold him for a long time before we had to let him go. I feel so bad. He was a hard dog to keep. Always messing in the house, no matter how many times he went outside.

I just miss him so much right now. I know I am a dog person, but it hurts so bad right now. I feel that if I had taken him to the Vet sooner, he may have had a different outcome. Jack Jack will always be a big part of my lost dogs, and I just wanted to honor him with his story.

You have no idea what he was like! He was the weirdest dog I had ever loved. Could not climb or go down steps. Would wet my bed if I left him there for less than 5 minues after he woke up. Everybody else in my family did not want to sleep with him because of his problem messing in the bed. But right now I miss him so much.

We gave him a nice funeral, buried with 2 of our elderly cocker spanials. I just wish I had taken him to the Vet sooner. Maybe with his special needs it might not have made a difference, but it does not help the pain. My daughter, Heidi, loved him the most, and she just moved to Tampa to start her Radiology Residency. I feel like I let her down. Maybe it is the stress of her leaving, and my Jack Jack leaving that I feel so alone. Thanks, I wanted to give Jack Jack some kind of special kudos. Jack Jack, we loved you so much, and will remember and miss you forever. 3 dogs are plenty for now, but someday I hope to rescue a special needs rat terrier again.

JACK JACK You are loved, and will be in our hearts forever. Love your special family. Remember All Dogs Go To Heaven, so someday we will be together.

We are so sorry for your loss. One thing to keep in mind is that Jack Jack died at home with people he loved, not in a sterile animal hospital. You obviously worked very hard to take good care of him with all his medical and emotional needs and wetting problems - many owners would not have given him those 3 years... Jo

Dog Agility With A Twist!

by Joseph Bates
(Idaho Falls, Idaho)

Stella Luna takes a mighty jump!

Stella Luna takes a mighty jump!

I am a military member serving at Spangdahlem AB, Germany. I am a confirmed "dog junkie" and could give two hoots about 12 steps for it! :)

The attached photo is of my 2 1/2 yr old female AmStaff "Stella Luna". I am the object she is jumping...:)

I don't have a lot of extra funds and don't have the luxury of purchased agility equipment. My Stella has learned to "up" and jump things like lawn chairs, childrens tables and can clear 4 crouching kids and 1 "down" dog in a single leap. She is a nut for frisbee and I would be in a club if we were in the states.

Until then I ask and she tries and we have a GREAT time.

I can see you.....or not

by Kathy Thacker
(Alexandria, KY USA)

I can see you

I can see you

Spike is my hero. He is a blind Rat Terrier who will be turning 5 yrs old in July this year. He went blind in November two years ago. However, he does everything just like he could see.

In our yard we have a large retaining wall, with steps that go up into the big yard and a deck. He goes right up the stairs and into the yard avoiding all obstacles. He runs and chases the squirrels up the trees and sits and barks or jumps up on the tree just like when he could see. He is all over the yard but knows his boundaries (no fencing) and loves to chase the rabbits (domestic and wild). He will corral the domestic ones and put them back under their house. They know to sit still and he will run right past them. As long as they do not move they are safe; otherwise he is right on their tail.

Nothing stops him. When we have company that do not know he is blind they are amazed that they could not tell it from his actions.

Alli the baby...

Abbie the Rat Terrier we gave to my grandma

I had a Rat Terrier before, she was so smart and cute, then my grandpa died and my grandma was all alone and we decided to give our dog Abbie to her. We didn't have a dog for two years, then we stayed at a friend's house and they just had puppies. The four cutest and sweetest little girls!!

And me being a dog lover RAN to the puppy pen, and none of them came up to me; they just stayed in their house and poked their little heads out and stared at me. I stayed there for a few more minutes talking to them, trying to coax them to come over and one puppy pranced over to the fence and started licking my hands and whining, wanting me to pick her up!

My mom and dad saw me holding her and said, "We can't get another dog, we just don't have time."

I held the puppy a little bit longer till she started licking my face and biting my nose. I put her down in the fence and she went in her house while I went inside to visit my friends. The next couple of days passed and the puppy still was the bravest and wanted to see me. Then the day before we were going to leave she started whining, and I went to hold her again. I brought her inside in my coat and sat on the couch, and the man we were staying with, Earl, started petting the pup. Then my father came inside, looked at me, and then looked at Earl and said, "How much do you want for the puppy?" I was shocked!! We paid for her, but what got me was that I had only held her for 30 minutes and put her in the fence and gone to bed...

She cried and whined ALL night, I couldn't believe how much she wanted to be with me! The next morning I woke up, got the puppy and we went home. I've had her for almost a month, she's so funny! She's two months old now. Her name is Alli and she's a Rat Terrier.

Thanks for your story and great photo, Kayla! Look for Alli in our Monthly Dog Show for May. Jo

Aawww
Catching a snooze

Me and my dog Ginger play all the time. She loves to wear clothes and play with her toys. I recently bought her a huge bone and she isn't really big but she chews on it every night before bed.

Just this last winter I bought her snow boots. She is so cute in them and they keep her feet warm. She also has a scarf and leg warmers; they are pink with polka dots. She loves to go outside and loves to eat too.

We have a lot of fun - she is my little baby. I don't know what I would do with out her. I got her 6 weeks after she was born. She is a Jack Russell and Pug mix - a clay color. She is now 2 yrs old since her birthday was March 28th.

Kerri Lynn, thanks for writing and what great photos! We especially like the one of Ginger looking in the mirror... Please look for her photos on our home page starting in June.

Blossom the bury bug!

Blossom and i have been happy playing together. She'll lay in my arms on the couch and sleep while getting her stomach rubbed. She's a small purebred westie, that loves tennis balls, baseballs, volleyballs, deflated footballs, and soccer balls! Balls that don't even fit in her mouth! She only has 1 ball that fits entirely in her mouth. Her black golf ball.

She loves to dig under this big bush. There's a rabbit hole there, and she goes beserk trying to catch one every time she sees it. Since she can't be outside and dig all day she's made another place. She buries waffles, and pancakes with maple syrup dripping little by little. You know where she buries them? In the clean laundry.

Editor's note: Bet that makes some people in the family rather unhappy!

Rosebud is a lovely, cute miniature Jack Russell. She loves to chase rabbits, cats and birds. She is going to be having pups soon (I can't wait). She loves running upstairs and stealing teddies from all the rooms and then ripping them up. She LOVES sleeping. Rosebud is a lovely dog. She will always be ........................my best friend.

Celine, thank you for sharing about Rosebud and sending in the very interesting photos. She looks like a very tolerant dog, unusual for Jack Russells it seems, to allow herself to be buried in sand and to have the patience to stay put while straddling an electric guitar! The photo with her and Gizmo is just way cute - did you put a pacifier next to her mouth for the photo or does she actually suck on it? Jo

Me and Kaja: All about the puppies

by alyssa
(sublimity OR)

Kaja before having pups

Kaja before having pups

Pooh Bear: Pooh Bear is a cute little puppy that seems to always get his way. He likes to wrestle with his brother and three sisters. He also likes to cuddle and jump off lots of stuff. Since he goes to Jessica our Bff whose dog is the dad gets Pooh Bear, Pooh is learning to share with his cute dad. One of his favorite things is to run in the house and he does not like dog clothes. His favorite toy is my socks and his dad has been teaching him how to dig. Pooh bear is a lovable little pup with style.
Sebastian: Sebastian is the tallest puppy who looks so cute in lime green. He was born third and even had to be revived. He is definitely the biggest cuddler of them all and will deal with anything. He loves his sisters and little brother more than you can imagine. He has brown spots on his ribs and his ears are brown. Sebastian comes when called and loves squeaky toys. He is also very playful. Go puppy!
Teeny: The runt of the litter. She is still very small as it is but also the toughest - suprising. She loves toys and puppy clothes and is the most hyper. She was the first born and didn't even need any help. She is very independent but really loves attention. We were originally going to keep her but decided Jessica's mom should have her. She loves to spoil her pups so I bet Teeny is happy.

Seal Pup: Seal Pup is our little chubby one and the most fluffy. She has a black collar with rhinestones and is crazy. She never stops with her loonyness. Seal is probably going to our bud Carry. His dog died a few years ago from tumors and hasn't gotten a new puppy yet. He wants a big dog but I think he will fall in love with Seal Pup. I just love Seal so much and i want her to be part of my bud's life that way he will have a new puppy. If any one loves chubby puppies, meet your new favorite.

Laska: A wweet puppy with a style for pink and a love for kids. Laska is a white puppy with a polar bear look to her face. Her pink collar also has rhinestones and has a bell for some reason. Laska has one of the coolest names in my opinion. She is the second smallest and loves kisses. Don't forget she is a cuddle bug with a fear of squeaky toys.

Those are all the puppies so I hope you enjoyed learning about them. Bye!

Me and Kaja #3 Kaja had puppies!

by Alyssa
(Sublimity Or )

Kaja and her puppies.

Kaja and her puppies.

Hello people. If you've seen Me and KaJa #1 and 2 you know me. (You can find the stories if you scroll down the page past Charlie the Staffordshire Terrier to Me and Kaja the Rat Terrier.)

Anyway, Kaja had 5 pups. Our bbf dog is the dad. She gets 1. We get 2. Her mom gets 1 and so does our friend. They all live real close that way the pups stay in the family.

There is Teeny, Sebastian, Pooh Bear, Laska, and Seal pup. They are half Rat Terrier and half Pomeranian/Chihuahua. They love to play and I am thinking about fly ball for Sebastian, my pup. He loves tennis balls and I heard it's a really good team sport for energetic dogs. Does anyone have tips for fly ball training? Laska is my mom's dog.

They are the cutest things and love toys. Teeny is most like Kaja. Seal pup is long haired and Pooh bear is the only brown one. They all have long tails and big ears. We knew Kaja was pregnant but we didn't expect so many. I fell in love with them the first time I saw them and I can't wait to see how they grow up. I am so excited to have another dog of my own.

I'd better get started training them so I hope you all have a wonderful day. Sebastian the third born had to be revived. He is going to be Indiana Jones for Halloween.

Laska: The softest puppy who looks like a bear cub in her face
Pooh Bear: All brown and the most hyper but really cute.
Seal Pup: Got her name for the way she used to sleep. Arms back like a seal with her flippers and extra scary teeth.
Teeny: The runt who was born first who looks like Kaja.
Together they make a group of Charaterainians. That's what we named then. Cha for Chahuahua. Rat for rat terrier and eranian for Pomeranian. Go dogs!
