Dog Cake Ideas

Looking for healthy, organic dog cake ideas for a party?

Sweet Potato Dog Cake

Although this page is about dog cake recipes, these cakes are also edible for most humans.

Since it's better for dog portions to be scaled to each dog's size, there should be plenty left for us larger two legged animals.

Conventional baking ingredients are not exactly healthy, for either dogs or humans, so this presents an extra challenge.

However, by experimenting, I was able to come up with two healthier dog cake ideas.

Bluebanapple Dog Cake

You'll likely earn bonus points with your dog(s) if they see you eating the cake as they seem to think that human food must be better than theirs!

Sweet Potato Dog Cake

Cake Ingredients (organic preferred)

1 1/2 Cups cooked sweet potatoes or yams

1 tsp baking soda or 3 tsp baking powder

1/3 Cup oil (coconut, almond or canola)

3 Tbsp nut butter (almond or cashew preferred, otherwise peanut)

2 Tbsp flax seed meal (optional)

1 Cup whole wheat or rye flour

2 Tbsp honey

1 egg

1/2 tsp salt

Topping Ingredients
(organic preferred)_

8 oz low fat cream cheese

1 finely grated carrot

sliced beets or red, green and yellow bell pepper strips

parsley or celery leaves

  • Preheat your oven to 350° Fahrenheit.
  • Sift the flour and baking soda together, then mix in the other ingredients.
  • Grease an 8" pie pan and spread the mixture in it.
  • Bake for about 20 minutes then turn the oven off and let it sit another 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Check for doneness, then remove, and cool.

              Topping Directions

  • Spread the cream cheese over the cooled cake in an even layer.
  • Make a stencil by getting a picture of a dog and tracing the outline onto a piece of clean cardboard. Cut it out and place it on the cream cheese, then trace around it with a toothpick or butter knife.
  • Fill in the areas inside the outline with pieces of shredded carrot
  • Decorate the edges with the beets and parsley or their substitutes
  • Add an eye and nose using bits of beet or bell pepper - can also use black olive or raisin but dogs should not eat the raisin

Bluebanapple Dog Cake

Cake Ingredients (organic preferred)

1 1/2 Cups cornmeal

1 Cup fresh or thawed frozen blueberries (save 2 Tbsp juice)

1 apple - cored, peeled, finely grated

2 ripe bananas

1/2 Cup oil (almond, coconut or canola)

2 tsp baking powder

1 egg

1/2 tsp salt (optional)

Topping Ingredients
(organic preferred)

8 oz low fat cream cheese, sour cream or plain yogurt

2 Tbsp blueberry juice

1 small can cooked beets or 1 fresh cooked beet (reserve 2 Tbsp juice and mash remainder)

  • Mix all the ingredients together.
  • Grease an 8- or 9-inch square or round pan.
  • Spread mixture in the pan.
  • Bake for 15 minutes and check for doneness. Edges should be golden brown and inserted butter knife should come out clean.
  • Let cool.

             Topping Directions

  • Divide the cream cheese or equivalent evenly into two bowls.
  • Mix beet juice into one bowl and blueberry juice into the other.
  • Spread the blueberry mixture in the center.
  • Put the beet mixture around the edges.
  • Add either type of mixture around the sides.
  • Make a stencil of a dog's head traced onto clean cardboard.
  • Outline the head in the center of your cake with a knife or toothpick.
  • Fill in the outlined head with mashed beets.
